Firstly, let me state, about the people moaning about the advert for gocompare! its absolutely brilliant!
I used Go Compare to purchase my car insurance and I am very happy with the deal that I got. I was happy that it was comparing enough websites and that the prices were in similar range that I didn't think that I was getting ripped off.
Go Compare is a simple and easy to use service which I would thoroughly recommend, I found putting in ridiculous amounts of car insurance details very time consuming before, when I completed my search for the insurance I wanted the quote was already entered into the corresponding companies system and it stopped me filling out the details again.
It was very easy to compare the different details of each individual policy (what was provided and what was not) as well as go back and make changes to (for instance excess) details and see the effects that this would have on my policy.
Great comparison web site.
Summary: definitely would recommend

As a young driver, finding the best price for insurance is very important to me, as it can save me hundreds of pounds in paying for expensive insurance (and considering I have paid over £2,000 now and not had any claims, I think I have earnt the right to cheaper insurance!). The prices between the two best quotes for a renewal I received from gocompare varied by £100 a year and gave me other features that would come up in the terms of my insurance, such as windscreen cover, total excess, courtesy car etc.
The layout of the site is very easy to use and navigate around, and it does save time when compared to contacting all the insurance companies for their best price.
Having also tried the other comparison sites, I would rank gocompare highly along with confused.com and better than money supermarket. The advert also is very annoying too but I'm sure that many people already know that by now.
Summary: A good comparison site for car insurance

I used gocompare recently as I have just passed my driving test and wanted to get some quotes for insurance on my car. Gocompare is a price comparison site and the main advantage of it is that you put in your details as you would normally to get a quote in a similar way you would if you were enquiring directly with an insurer, but instead of getting one quote, you are given about 20-30 from lots of different companies allowing you to select the cheapest deal.
When you first log onto the site you will need to choose a user name and password and you are then forwarded to a page which allows you to 'start a new quote'. In this section, you must enter all of your personal details for the quote to be successful. They will ask you questions such as you age, address and postcode, how long you have been driving, details of you car and how long you have held you license, as well as any history of driving offences or insurance claims - make sure you are accurate in this section as any false information given can invalidate any insurance policy you end up going with.
When you have finished entering these details, you simply click 'Go Compare' and are given a list of possible insurance deals. What I liked about this section is that it gives the quotes in price order so that the cheapest is first. The results are presented on a table which lets you compare what you are getting for your money, for example, windscreen cover included, courtesy car and legal cover included. This not only has the potential to save you a lot of money, but also saves you time in entering the same details on thirty different sites were you to do it manually. It also allows you to save up to ten quotes on different cars, so if you are considering buying a car, you can save and go back to compare insurance quotes against the price you are paying for the motor (another handy feature).
Once you have selected the quote you would like to learn more about - there is a function on the compare table that redirects you to the company providing the quote - generally this is to the contact section of their website. You can then call them and quote the unique reference number given to you by go compare.
As I said, I used this service recently and got a really good deal, as I have just passed my test I was expecting quotes to be high and most were in the region of around £2000 ( I drive a 1.9TDi), the deal I was given cost me £1500 in total so I was really impressed.
The only downside I found to this site that was I was plagued with telephone calls from the other insurers who didn't offer the best quote asking me if I was still interested in insurance. They promised to try and match the best quote I had but none of them did (in fact, none of them came close). The phone calls did stop after about a week, I do occasionally get the odd email though, a small price to pay however for a £500 saving in my opinion.
Summary: Easy to Use and Saves alot of time!
